Now that I have your attention, I’d like to share a story with you about a time that NOT eating a lasagna was actually more enjoyable that eating it, and in that moment, lives were changed forever.
I have facilitated many group juice fast experiences over the years. Unlike many ‘detox’ programs out there, our program was one of self-discovery and personal experimentation based on the idea that it is only possible to observe your relationship with food when you ‘break up’ with it for a short period of time. By offering these experiences in a group setting, it creates a support network of people all choosing to experiment together, seeing what it’s like to 'stop eating’ for up to 5 days. Not a water fast, the juice supplied most of the daily necessary nutrition plus more, and allows participants to go about their daily lives. We were hosting a group juice fast at a local Wellness Center where a very interesting participant joined us, and she had one of the most amazing transformative experiences I have ever witnessed that went beyond her personal relationship with food.

Her name was Jennifer, and she was one of the employees at the Wellness Center. She was very interested and wanted to participate, but she was hesitant. “My family is coming to town that weekend, and I think it would be too hard to do the juice fast while they are here.”, she told me. I agreed, and said that it indeed would be difficult, but also very worthwhile. You see, often, we wait until the “perfect moment” to start something new and challenging, and the truth is that that perfect moment is quite elusive. If it does show up, it may only even last a moment, which is hardly long enough to get anything done. If we start something new when it is the most difficult, it does require extra attention and effort, but it also means that it can only become easier over time. You get the “hard part” out of the way early, and then it becomes relatively easier by default. Like jumping into a swimming pool when it’s cold, versus slowly walking into the icy waters. Either way, you are eventually swimming in the water, but one seems “easier” than the other, but might actually be the harder, more uncomfortable route.
Lots of ricotta cheese, Italian sausage, a rich meat sauce, and hefty noodles, held together with a luxurious sprinkling of mozzarella cheese.
